Home Reading and Spelling Support
This school year, Grade 1 and 2 teachers in Lakeland Catholic are using the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) Foundations program for reading and spelling instruction. Your child will be learning new concepts (sounds and letter patterns) to build their skills in reading and spelling words.
Three Ways to Support Your Child at Home
The UFLI Foundations program includes Home Practice sheets to help families support their child’s learning at home. The home practice sheets are available in printed form from your child’s teacher or from the second column of the Decodable Books for Home Practice Chart.
Parents who want to provide extra reading practice for their child can access free digital books that align with the concepts being taught in the classroom. A chart that includes links to the digital copies of the home practice plus links to free digital books can be found on the Decodable Books for Home Practice Chart. If parents are unsure of what lesson their child is currently working on, they can contact their child’s teacher for this information.
Another way to support your child’s reading is to read books to your child that are engaging and interesting. Our school library and the public libraries in your community are a great source for quality children’s literature. The positive effects of reading to your child reach well beyond literacy. Reading a favourite book to your children not only helps you bond with them, but also gives your children a sense of intimacy and well-being. This feeling of intimacy helps your child feel close to you, and the feelings of love and attention encourage positive growth and development.
